New Zscaler Mobile Protects Smartphones

Published on by aubattery.over-blog.com

Zscaler already protects Internet traffic for thousands of businesses. Administrators can secure devices by blocking dangers traffic, manage applications and permissions, enforce compliance with regulations, and obtain detailed analyses of Internet activity, all without installing software on the endpoint PCs. At the RSA Conference today the company unveiled Zscaler Mobile, which extends this same protection to all mobile devices.

Amit Sinha, Zscaler's CTO, pointed out that smartphones have overtaken PCs in units sold, and this gap will only widen. Businesses have to deal with the problem of workers who connect to the company network using smartphones. The same smartphone that connects with Exchange, Salesforce, SAP, and other business-related apps may also be running FaceBook, Gmail, and Angry Birds. It's an emerging nightmare for administrators.

Sinha noted that with billions of mobile devices and millions of apps it just doesn't make sense to attempt endpoint protection. Any app-based solution would be platform-dependent, and not all platforms permit the same types of security protection. Users are already unhappy with apps that suck up precious resources and drain battery life. Zscaler mobile solves this problem by enforcing protection in the cloud, with nothing whatsoever running on the mobile device.

To install protection an administrator simply pushes a configuration file to employee's mobile devices. This configuration file uses the device's own built-in VPN software to direct all traffic through the Zscaler cloud. Sinha admitted the possibility of a platform arising that doesn't come with VPN support, but reasonably concluded it's not likely.

It's also possible that a user more interested in surfing porn than securing company data might simply change the VPN settings. Some mobile platforms allow administrators to lock VPN settings, and administrators could definitely prevent any device from connecting to the company network other than through the VPN. It's even possible to connect with the Zscaler cloud upstream from a WiFi network, so all devices connecting wirelessly are protected.

Zscaler Mobile is available for North American customers directly from Zscaler for $1 to $3 per user, depending on the size of the organization. Contact the company for details.
